In addition to effectively treating such hand and wrist injuries as cartilage tears, wrist sprains, tendonitis, cysts and osteoarthritis, our board-certified doctors have extensive experience successfully treating individuals with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome without carpal tunnel release surgery.

Now a fairly common condition, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a neuropathy caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist that supplies feeling and movement to parts of the hand. This nerve enters the hand via the carpal tunnel, which is very narrow. When the tunnel swells, it pinches the nerve and causes pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, or muscle damage in the hand and fingers.

This syndrome is most often caused by repetitive motion–such as typing on a computer keyboard–which is why an increasing number of people are being diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel. Sports such as racquetball and handball, as well as writing and driving are other known causes.

If you're experiencing weakness in your hand or wrist or pain, numbness or tingling in your fingers, you also may have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Our board-certified medical doctors will perform a thorough examination to help make sure. Your doctor may prescribe diagnostic testing, including electrodiagnostic testing, which helps diagnose disorders of the muscles and nerves. Performed in our Hoboken and Bayonne offices by one of our board-certified physicians, there are two types conducted:

  • Electromyography (EMG), which tests muscle activity.
  • Nerve conduction studies, which record how nerves function and are usually done along with the EMG.

Based on these results, your Spine & Sports Health doctor will create a customized treatment plan for you that may include:

  • Non-surgical Pain Management therapies that are minimally invasive and delivered with extreme precision for highly effective, lasting results. These techniques include steroid injections under ultrasound guidance.
  • Proactive Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation to restore flexibility, strength and function.

A friend recommended The Spine & Sports Health Center when I was in terrible pain due to a herniated disk. It was incredible—within 24 hours I saw Dr. Visco, had an MRI, and made a plan for PT. I worked with Juan for several months and my issues improved dramatically. If you are looking for a professional, knowledgeable, caring group of people, go to The Spine & Sports Health Center.
